Artist Statement
How does one make a lasting mark in a world of constant flux? This question drives my work, particularly after being diagnosed with cancer—a moment that made me intimately aware of the fragility of life. That awareness has heightened my exploration of themes like impermanence, emotion and memory, and resilience, which echo through the layered, abstract worlds I create in my drawings.
My practice is heavily inspired by the raw emotional resonance of Philip Guston and the layered, dynamic line work of Julie Mehretu. Like them, I strive to embrace the tension between control and chaos, letting my subconscious guide the process. The marks I make are attempts to ground something permanent in a world that is constantly shifting, mirroring the transient nature of life itself.
The lines and layers in my work reflect the messy beauty of interconnectedness—the invisible threads that bind us to the world, nature, and each other. These unseen connections, expressed through intentional and intricate overlapping layers, reflect the complexity of our relationships and existence.
This isn’t just about contemplation; it’s about owning the chaos, finding strength in it, and leaving a lasting impression. My art doesn’t ask for permission—it breaks down the door and owns the room.
